Akshar Maganbeharie was born in 1995 in Pietermaritzburg, where his parents lived and worked, his family then relocated to Randburg, Johannesburg in 2001 where he went to primary and high school and where he still lives now. Akshar is currently in his third year of study at The University of the Witwatersrand and is completing his BA in Fine Arts.
As a child, Akshar took a great affinity to drawing and painting which developed into a love for creating art in high school where he started painting and drawing.
His practice, today, sees him working in mediums such as photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and installations.
Being an avid and active consumer of media, the themes present in his works relate to popular culture, mediated images and media influences. His photography, however, ranges from daily encounters to plant life, spaces and personal relationships.
Akshar’s artwork questions and provides a critical response to his encounters with media texts and socially constructed ideologies.
